Photo of the Week | April 6-10

Agromeck Co-Photo Editor, Chris Rupert said: This week’s photo of the week was taken by staff photographer John Joyner. To start off, John did a great job framing this photo. He placed the subject, who is facing right, in the left side of the frame. This gives the subject plenty of room and makes it seem like the disc could fly right across the frame. The tight cropping helps focus the reader’s attention on the offense and defense and helps reduce any distracting elements in the photo. Lastly, John made great use of the natural lighting available, which highlights both the subject and the disc.

Agromeck Co-Photo Editor, Chris Rupert said: This week’s photo of the week was taken by Agromeck co-photo editor Ryan Parry during the third round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Ryan did a great job covering the whole tournament but this photo really stands out of the bunch.  In sports photography; there are three types of shot that are critical to get, action, reaction, and emotion. Ryan did a good capturing all three in this photo. This photo tells the story of the game where N.C. State, the underdog, unexpectedly defeated number one seed Villanova.

Agromeck Co-Photo Editor, Ryan Parry said: This week’s photo of the week is by staff photographer Nick Faulkner. Nick went out and shot the festivities that happened during the snow days on campus. Here Nick shot students sledding at the Court of North Carolina and caught a student leaping onto an inner tube. The reaction on both the student jumping and the students standing around watching is truly what makes this photo stand out from the rest. It’s always great when we get photographers covering snow days on campus and here Nick did an amazing job.

Agromeck Co-Photo Editor, Ryan Parry said: This week’s photo of the week is from staff photographer Kamakshi Arora. Kamakshi is a newer photographer that took on a difficult assignment in the Double Barrel Benefit. She did a great job though, coming back with this photo of the lead singer of Lonnie Walker performing. The emotion on his face as he sings makes this picture a step above the rest. Her lighting was done well and the photo is sharp as it should be. Overall, this photo is a great show of her photographic abilities.

Agromeck Co-Photo Editor, Chris Rupert said: This week’s photo of the week was taken by Tyler Andrews. Tyler took a portrait of Emily Meineke, an Ph.D. candidate in entomology. Tyler did a great job setting up this portrait. He placed the subject in an interesting location that adds to the story of the photo, but doesn’t distract from the subject. Tyler used three flashes in this setup; setting up the main and secondary flashes to her left and right, and used a third flash to help bring out the background. Using this technique Tyler made the subject pop from the background.

Agromeck Co-Photo Editor, Ryan Parry said: This week’s Photo of the Week is by Technician Photo Editor Caide Wooten. Caide covered the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration in Talley Student Union’s new State Ballroom and took full advantage of the visual elements available in the room. For a speaker shot, this photo stands out from the rest because of the speaker addressing the crowd with both her words and her hands. The NC State sign in the background provides a strong visual background that fills the dead space in the photo. Caide’s shot stands out from the rest of the photos by offering a straight on view of the speaker.

Agromeck Co-Photo Editor, Chris Rupert said: This week’s photo of the week was taken at the Hunar Revolution Fashion Show by Technician’s Photo Editor, Caide Wooten. Three photographers shot this event and all came back with great photos but this one really stood out from the rest. There is both great emotion and action. Caide did a great job using negative space here. The photo is sharp and the blacked out background really makes the dancer pop off the page. Too often photographers focus only on shooting models on the runway when covering a fashion show. This photo is a great example of what else you can find when covering…

Photo of the Week | Jan. 5-9

Agromeck Co-Photo Editor, Ryan Parry said: This week’s Photo of the Week is a basketball photo by John Joyner. Winter break brought a lot of basketball to PNC Arena in Raleigh and with that came some amazing shots from our staff. John’s photo stood out because of the action going on in the photo. Basketball provides plenty of opportunities to catch a player driving for a layup, but here John caught Trevor Lacey leaping toward the basket in a wide shot. Shooting wide in basketball isn’t as easy to do, but it works extremely well in this shot. Not only does if have great action, but it also has great…
