Technician Photo Editor Sarah Tudor said:

We chose Luis’s photo because of its good overall composition and because it captured a good moment in the football game. This photo tells a story — in it, you can clearly see that N.C. State is beating Boston College, so when someone looked at the newspaper, they could see what the focus of the article might be before reading the story.

Lighting at the daytime games is so harsh. It’s almost hard to work with it. But in this image, you can still see Russell’s face. The good use of low depth of field helps keep the viewer trained on the action. Good composition with rule of thirds. And, best of all, this is a good moment giving the viewer some sense of tension in the game. Good cropping. Try not to cut off feet.
